Stop the perfectionism
On my Tumblr site someone asked me for some general advice for an aspiring comic creator. This is what was on my mind. Thought I'd share it here on Deviantart as well.
Right now all I can think of is something I've been thinking about lately. And that is the depression some of us artists get about our art. Like our expectations aren't just "My drawings need to be good!", they are "My art needs to be PERFECT."
So I would suggest always try to improve, gain confidence, but expect good/average output. Don't expect perfect art, ever. By doing this only causes you to be frustrated, which in turn causes mistakes, which pisses you off more, then you're stuck in a lame spiraling circle downward to the pathetic whiny artist. Which in turn kills your deadline. Giving yourself freedom from perfection makes drawing much easier and better art is produced and on time.
I'm currently working on this piece where it started out difficult, I had high expectations for it, I was in a bad mood, nothing was

You know, this DA account is nearly 10 years old. Crazy, right?

I look back at some of the artwork I submitted years and years ago and sometimes I think to myself, "What happened to that guy? That guy had talent. That guy was going places."

Indeed I see some of my earlier work and it seems so much... I don't know... easier? More appealing with much less effort. I don't remember putting in nearly as much effort into doing some of the pieces I really like from my past as I do into work I'm not happy with now.

It really does seem I'm working so much harder for much less reward in terms of appealing artwork compared to how things were before... well before I went to art school.

I don't know. Maybe it's just part of the struggle.

Regardless, there's nothing to do but to go forward. Maybe I can't find the innocent carefree mindset and approach to artwork that I had when I was younger. Maybe I will. But I won't find it by continuing to be stuck in the past. Though it is good to look back now and then.

So if you're looking for me, look to the future. That's where I'll be, and that's where I'm going.

Happy Holidays, y'all!

I'm just a Japanese guy looking for a fight. No wait, that was Ryu Hayabusa.

I'm an artist... yes... that's what I am... just trying to get better and better everyday. I want to get published and working someday soon, because it's cool doing what you love, but it's even better if you get paid for it. :P

I'm Canadian and totally in yo face. Except not.

Go Leafs!

I've been BUSY. lol. This project has gotten a teeny bit bigger than I imagined. Sigh. I'm wondering where the updates are too.
